I feel like there used to be such a clear distinction among each decade when it came to fashion and style. You know that flapper dresses are from the 20s, full skirts are from the 50s, and flared jeans are from the 70s. And even when there was a bit of overlap or repetition, each decade always had its own special flavor. But if you were to ask me what that special flavor is for us today, for this decade – I wouldn’t be able to answer you because I don’t think I can narrow it down. And you know what, I think that’s pretty awesome.

There is so much room for individuality in fashion these days. So much in fact, that there’s even enough for something I never thought would see the light of day outside of theme parks – Disney Style. Continue reading →

Second day hair can be a pain, especially in the Philippine heat and humidity.

I try not to shampoo my hair everyday so it doesn’t dry, but by the second day it starts to become obvious. Normally I’d just use a cap to cover it, but that only works on errand days and weekends. For work days, I just put it up in a sleek ponytail. And while that’s all well and good, it also becomes a little boring after a while. So I decided to get a little more creative. And for me creativity usually means one thing: Disney.

I’ve been asked many times how I plan my Disney outfits both in and out of the parks. A lot of people think I never repeat my Disney pieces, but that isn’t true at all! In fact, I love reworking my clothes in new ways, and it’s one of the things I enjoy doing most.

What is Disneybounding?

If you’re new to the Disney community, chances are you’ve never heard the term Disneybounding before. But if you are anything like me (an adult who loves all things Disney and who wishes they were young enough to wear Princess dresses in Disneyland – and well, IRL), you will come to love Disneybounding as much as I do.

The trend stemmed from the Tumblr blog: Disneybound.co created by Leslie Kay in 2012, as a way for adults to show their love for Disney in more modern, fashion forward ways. Since people above 14 years of age are not allowed to wear full costumes to the Disney parks, Disneybounding allows adults to dress up as their favorite characters without breaking any park rules. If you search #Disneybound today, you will see a whole community of participants showing off their creative and stylish interpretations of their favorite Disney characters.

How do you do it?

Now how exactly does Disneybounding work?

It is when you take elements from a particular character – colors, placement of colors, accessories, even hairstyles – and translate them into modern clothing. Like taking Belle’s yellow gown and turning it into a yellow off-shoulder sun dress. Or taking Ariel’s purple shell bra and green tail and wearing a purple tube top and green fitted skirt instead. The possibilities are endless, which is what makes Disneybounding so much fun.

It is time. The mane event draws near! The Lion King hits cinemas in just a few days!

The excitement is so real, that this is the second #KatsieDisneyStyle Lion King style blog I’ve done in preparation for the movie. (You can find the first one here)

This time, I decided to do something a little different. Instead of styling a Lion King t-shirt like I did in the first style blog, I styled 3 outfits themed to the movie. After all, you don’t have to wear something as obvious as a character t-shirt to celebrate your Disney style. Sometimes all you need is a little imagination and pixie dust – and in my case, ears.

After 25 years, we are just a few lion sleeps away from hearing Simba’s roar back on the big screen. And just as how I’ve felt with every Disney live action remake so far, I am both nervous and excited – especially for this one.

The Lion King was such a big part of my childhood – its music absolutely unforgettable, its dialogue superb, its storyline the first of its kind. Plus it’s my dad’s favourite Disney movie – which pretty much made it a Sunday morning staple growing up.

This movie is a true Disney classic, so I was really skeptical at first. How exactly would you make a “live action” film about talking and singing lions? But when the first trailer dropped, my jaw did too. It looked visually stunning! (I mean, did you see that gorgeous Rafiki clip with the fireflies??) And I am looking forward to seeing how Disney and Jon Favreau have made this masterpiece into a familiar, yet brand new work of art.

Lion King merch has started to line store shelves in anticipation of the big day, and instead of buying all of them (though believe me I was tempted to), I decided to do something more practical.
