Truly Magical: My Hogwarts Lookbook

Books have been purchased, robes freshly laundered, parchment neatly rolled up, Knuts and Sickles ready for the Trolley, owl back in the cage, trunks packed and heavy, and my wand safely stowed in my pocket – It’s the first day of school for Wizarding kind, and off to King’s Cross Station we go!

September 1st marks a very special day in the magical community. For bright-eyed 11-year olds who have just received their Hogwarts acceptance letters over the summer, it is a day of many firsts. It’s their first ride on the Hogwarts Express, their first journey across the lake with their first glimpse of their Home for the next seven years, their first feast in the Great Hall, and who could forget – their first and only Sorting ceremony.

To celebrate the occasion, I’ve decided to do a first of my own.

The Basics: Mary Poppins (Style to Bound to Cosplay)

Remember when I said last month that I was starting a new series showing you the difference between Disney Style and Disneybound? Well for this month I’ve taken it a step further by adding Cosplay into the mix.

For today’s demonstration, I’ve chosen one very special character for one very special reason: Mary Poppins! Because today is her 55th anniversary.

“A cover is not the book. So open it up and take a look.”

Katsie Disney Style: Retro Disney

I feel like there used to be such a clear distinction among each decade when it came to fashion and style. You know that flapper dresses are from the 20s, full skirts are from the 50s, and flared jeans are from the 70s. And even when there was a bit of overlap or repetition, each decade always had its own special flavor. But if you were to ask me what that special flavor is for us today, for this decade – I wouldn’t be able to answer you because I don’t think I can narrow it down. And you know what, I think that’s pretty awesome.

There is so much room for individuality in fashion these days. So much in fact, that there’s even enough for something I never thought would see the light of day outside of theme parks – Disney Style. Continue reading

The Basics: Disney Hairstyles

Second day hair can be a pain, especially in the Philippine heat and humidity.

I try not to shampoo my hair everyday so it doesn’t dry, but by the second day it starts to become obvious. Normally I’d just use a cap to cover it, but that only works on errand days and weekends. For work days, I just put it up in a sleek ponytail. And while that’s all well and good, it also becomes a little boring after a while. So I decided to get a little more creative. And for me creativity usually means one thing: Disney.

Get to Know: Ginny Weasley

I was one of those people who thankfully got to read Harry Potter before I watched it. Before the movies even came out, I had very different ideas of how characters looked, talked, and even moved. That’s the beauty of books right? You get to interpret the things that you read and build your own magical world all in your head.

I had just finished reading The Goblet of Fire when the first movie was released, and even with a lot of things being changed for the big screen I was prepared to accept these new faces and scenes for the love of the franchise.

Three, four, five movies in – directors changed, filming style and art direction changed, and still I accepted every new thing and every new person.

All except one. Ginny Weasley.

Disney Capsule Wardrobe: Summer Edition

I’ve been asked many times how I plan my Disney outfits both in and out of the parks. A lot of people think I never repeat my Disney pieces, but that isn’t true at all! In fact, I love reworking my clothes in new ways, and it’s one of the things I enjoy doing most.

IMG_1234.JPG

To show you how simple it is to make the most out of your Disney wardrobe, I’ve decided to start another monthly series on this blog: The Disney Capsule Wardrobe. (That’s two you can look forward to now: the other is my Disneybound vs Disney Style series)

For this first edition, we’re focusing on summer outfits. So for any of you who are planning a trip to the parks this summer, or who simply want to breathe a little magic into your day to day style, keep reading!

The Basics: Disneybound vs Disney Style

What is Disneybounding?

If you’re new to the Disney community, chances are you’ve never heard the term Disneybounding before. But if you are anything like me (an adult who loves all things Disney and who wishes they were young enough to wear Princess dresses in Disneyland – and well, IRL), you will come to love Disneybounding as much as I do.

The trend stemmed from the Tumblr blog: Disneybound.co created by Leslie Kay in 2012, as a way for adults to show their love for Disney in more modern, fashion forward ways. Since people above 14 years of age are not allowed to wear full costumes to the Disney parks, Disneybounding allows adults to dress up as their favorite characters without breaking any park rules. If you search #Disneybound today, you will see a whole community of participants showing off their creative and stylish interpretations of their favorite Disney characters.

How do you do it?

Now how exactly does Disneybounding work?

It is when you take elements from a particular character – colors, placement of colors, accessories, even hairstyles – and translate them into modern clothing. Like taking Belle’s yellow gown and turning it into a yellow off-shoulder sun dress. Or taking Ariel’s purple shell bra and green tail and wearing a purple tube top and green fitted skirt instead. The possibilities are endless, which is what makes Disneybounding so much fun.

Into the Wild: Lion King Disney Style in Adventureland

I was never much of an Adventureland girl. Growing up, Disneyland always meant Fantasyland and Toontown for me. So every time I’d style my park outfits even as an adult, I’d mainly focus on those two lands with either Princess or Mickey Style. But with Lion King in theaters on the week of our Hong Kong trip, I decided to give Adventureland style a go for the very first time.

And I have to say, I think I’ve been converted. I don’t think I truly appreciated the theming and attention to detail of this place until I styled an outfit around it, and it was really fun to discover places that I never took photos in before.

Pretty in Pink Disney Style: Gingham Galore!

I’ve always had a fascination with picnics. As a kid I remember putting together a simple basket (the one we used to store our fruits) with peanut butter sandwiches and iced tea, and heading to our neighborhood park ready to read and relax by the trees. Of course we didn’t have much of a park really. We did have a small playground with a nice little patch of grass, where I sat for all of 10 minutes before realizing that Manila heat and humidity wasn’t ideal for picnics.

Still, I’ve always been in love with the idea. And to this day whenever opportunity permits, I take picnics when I travel – or more likely, I dress like a picnic table instead. Lol.

Andy’s Toy Box: Toy Story Land (Disneybound!)

Possibly my favorite outfits from the whole trip: Woody and Buzz!

IMG_6727.JPG

I can’t even tell you how much getting to Disneybound these two meant to us.

After watching and crying over Toy Story 4 together, we got out of the cinema and stumbled upon 0917 – Globe Telecom’s clothing brand. After comparing ourselves to Buzz and Woody throughout the movie, seeing these items in the store got an immediate “yes” from us!

Even without a Disney trip or occasion planned, we knew we wanted to Disneybound our favorite duo together.
