Books have been purchased, robes freshly laundered, parchment neatly rolled up, Knuts and Sickles ready for the Trolley, owl back in the cage, trunks packed and heavy, and my wand safely stowed in my pocket – It’s the first day of school for Wizarding kind, and off to King’s Cross Station we go!
September 1st marks a very special day in the magical community. For bright-eyed 11-year olds who have just received their Hogwarts acceptance letters over the summer, it is a day of many firsts. It’s their first ride on the Hogwarts Express, their first journey across the lake with their first glimpse of their Home for the next seven years, their first feast in the Great Hall, and who could forget – their first and only Sorting ceremony.
To celebrate the occasion, I’ve decided to do a first of my own.
As a Gryffindor, I have never worn any Hogwarts colors apart from scarlet and gold. Save for a Fantastic Beasts outfit or two, I have never really tried on any other scarf, tie, or robe. So I thought it would be fun in the spirit of the first day of school, and in the spirit of the Sorting ceremony that takes place on this day, to come up with looks for each of the four Houses to celebrate the place we all call Home.
There’s nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can’t see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.
Starting off with my own House of course. Since I’ve worn my Gryffindor robes at least 394 times in the past 3 years (comes with my job), I knew I didn’t want to just wear a variation of my uniform and call it a day. I thought I’d do something a little bit different with this lookbook by experimenting with layers and textures.
For a cozy day in the Gryffindor Common Room, I wore a maroon jumper over an oatmeal-colored linen blouse, a plaid pleated midi skirt, leather suspenders, and brown heeled oxfords. I topped it off with my Gryffindor headband that matched my jumper perfectly.
This is the perfect outfit for a day of planning new adventures, strategizing the next Quidditch match, and sipping Butterbeer by the fire.
You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;
For our dear old Hufflepuffs, I put together something fun and comfortable, best for a picnic by the lake on a sunny day.
I wore a yellow plaid button-up with a knitted brown sleeveless vest on top, tucked into a pair of comfortable yellow high-waisted trousers. Cinched everything in with an antique looking brown leather belt.
There’s just something about this outfit that makes me feel so happy. Perhaps its this color (or their proximity to the kitchens lol), but Puff style definitely puts a smile on my face.
You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;
For Ravenclaw, I had to put together an outfit that could last a full day hunched over books and parchment in the library. So I went for something practical – something that wouldn’t wrinkle from sitting down the whole day.
So I went for these navy blue graph-check trousers, a navy blue woven belt, and a grey cable-knit sweater.
For an entire day of reading, I also brought out my glasses. And as a nod to my favorite Ravenclaw, I had to accent this look with Dirigible Plum earrings perfect for those Quibbler breaks in between textbooks.
Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
if you’ve a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;
For Slytherin, I wanted to do something a little more sophisticated and glamorous.
So I wore a crisp white button-up with a rich velvet vest on top, grey Dupplin-check trousers, gold oxfords, a black leather belt, and a Slytherin tie.
I got serious Tom Riddle vibes from this outfit, and I’m not mad about it.
Or perhaps in Slytherin
You’ll make your real friends,
Those cunning folks use any means
To achieve their ends.
I have to say, putting together outfits for each House has been nothing short of – as Ron would say, wicked. I don’t know about you, but I am definitely ready for another year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry now.
The magic lives on.
For now, I leave you with these wise words said on this very day, 28 years ago:
“Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak!”
