Disney Prinsesa: Celebrating World Princess Week as a Filipina Disneybounder

Disney has always been a big, beautiful part of my life.

I was singing and dancing along to its songs since I could walk and talk. Watching its movies in theaters and on repeat at home has been a family weekend activity ever since I can remember. Dressing up as my favorite characters and sporting matching Disney Style outfits has been a tradition that I have shared with my mom since I was a little girl. And the Happiest Place on Earth is filled with some of my best and happiest memories.

Today, that love for Disney music has led to a career in the performing arts and even in teaching. Disney movies and park visits are still highly anticipated and celebrated by our wonderful family of grown-ups. Dressing up in Disney has now evolved into participating in an online community full of creators and dreamers just like me. And the Happiest Place on Earth remains one of my greatest sources of magical moments to this day.

Suffice it to say that Disney is my Home – but a part of me has always felt like something was missing. Whether on the big screen or on Main Street, I never quite saw myself in any of the characters I grew up wanting to be. And that stirred something in me – an ache to find myself in the magic.

“Growing up as a young Filipina, there was not a single Disney Princess that looked like me.”

These were the words that inspired my #DisneyPrinsesa journey 3 years ago.

Pink Princess

Saved the best for last on this Tokyo Disney Style Blog.

I’ve been going to Disney in pink ever since I was a child. And before rose gold and millennial pink were a thing, blush was the color I’ve always felt prettiest and most confident in. So now that I’m older, I make sure that there is always at least one pink day – especially on my birthday trips.

And let me tell you, I think this may be the most pink outfit I’ve ever worn. And this includes the outfits my mom and I wore on our last Disney trip, which were already pretty extra.

Toontown Bound

Okay, so this next one isn’t necessarily a bound, but more of a Disney style ensemble. It takes me back to those days as a kid where I’d go to the parks in a Mickey shirt and a hat and call it a day. This is what I would call a “ride day” outfit, because it’s practical for a whole day of gallivanting around the parks (not that I go on that many rides lol)

Second day, second bound!

Once again I was faced with the challenge of coming up with our winter Disneybounds. Then I realized, when I think winter, I think snow! And just like that, we knew what our second bound was going to be:

Frozen.

Quite literally too. We really were frozen. It was the coldest day of our trip.

But you know, some people are worth melting freezing for, so we strapped on our warmest winter gear and ran around the best park in the world as Elsa, Anna, and Olaf.

Dogs of Disney

My annual birthday trip blog posts are here! In March. Lol.

For those of you who have been following along since last year, yes my birthday is in January. And yes. I am blogging late again. But see, the first two months of the year have been insane. There was Disney, there was my best friend coming home, and there was my students performing in their very first musical. It doesn’t sound like a lot. But it was. My eyebags will tell you so.

Anyway, like my Disney trip with mom, there isn’t much information I can give you that hasn’t already been covered here, so this will be more of a style blog than anything else. But if you have any questions about Tokyo, shoot me a message and I’ll gladly answer them as best as I can.

Planning the outfits and Disneybounds for this trip was quite a challenge. I’d never gone to Disney in the height of winter before, so I couldn’t exactly follow my skirt-and-off-shoulder formula this time.

For our first day in DisneySea, I knew we were heading to the park in the afternoon straight from our flight. So that meant that we had to be extra warm. We were coming in from Manila weather, and I could not afford to get sick, so I thought, what better Disneybound than characters who actually have fur?

Tokyo Disney Sea – what Disney travelers call the best park in the world. And for very good reason.

Having only seen photos of the world famous Disney Sea, I couldn’t quite decide which character I wanted to Disneybound. There were so many choices. So many magical lands.

Then I saw it. Mermaid Lagoon. The colors looked so vibrant and the theming looked absolutely incredible, I knew in an instant that Ariel was it. So Under the Sea we went.

Disney Tradition

A few weeks ago, I went on the perfect Disney trip with mom – filled with laughter, music, food, conversation, and a whole lot of fun. Pretty much what I do on a regular basis with her, except with that added touch of Disney magic.

I’d always considered my family to be a Disney family. Dad and I enjoy re-watching the movies together on Sunday mornings after breakfast. My brothers and I always geek out over new releases from Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars. And Disney music is pretty much the only genre of music we actually agree on as a family. But going to Disneyland? That’s for me and mom.

Ever since I was a kid, it was always my mom and I who enjoyed the same things in the parks. While the boys were off riding roller coasters, my mom and I would go on kiddie rides. When my brothers started to outgrow the Mickey shirts, my mom and I got into twinning outfits and Minnie ears. When my dad started to get bored lining up, my mom and I would look for every possible food cart we could sample. So this year, we talked about going on a little girls trip. We decided to dress up, take photos, eat, and ride all the kiddie rides we wanted. And for this very special trip, we decided to go to a park we’d never been to before – Tokyo Disneyland.
